School Rallies to Support Haiti

Like many schools, organizations, communities and individuals, The Wakefield School is responding to the massive earthquake in Haiti by collecting needed supplies. This compassionate response is par for the course for the Wakefield community as the school regularly contributes to organizations that help people in need, and sometimes to organizations that help animals in need.


While Haiti’s earthquake may be a dramatic example of how Wakefield is connected to the larger world, a Wakefield educational experience includes several opportunities for international travel. A particular highlight is The Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). Students at Wakefield have an opportunity to work with Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, VA, and the Smithsonian Institution for conservation and wildlife efforts, and can even travel to Namibia with a Wakefield science teacher. Other international travel opportunities include Greece and Rome as part of the Latin curriculum, and England and other parts of Europe with our history teachers. And, if international travel is not for you, other US-based opportunities include local trips in and around Virginia, and trips to New York City to visit museums and catch a play. Even our sports teams get into the mix by participating in service activities as part of their athletic season, whether running a camp for local kids, or extending a helping hand as they treat themselves (through fundraising) to a team trip to the Virgin Islands. With these opportunities, my daughter has traveled more than I have in the past three years!

My First Blog Post - Ever!

My family became part of the Wakefield family about three years ago when our daughter transferred from public school in Fairfax County to Wakefield’s Middle School as a sixth grader. I thought we would be here for the three years of middle school and then return to our public high school. Well, my daughter is now a freshman in the Upper School and beyond happy with everything about Wakefield. I am continually amazed (and so pleased) that she is so happy during her teenage years. My husband and I are pleased to see her do well in class and participate fully in extra-curricular activities. But these measures only hint at the real reason I am a Wakefield fan. My daughter is surrounded by caring friends, caring teachers, caring coaches and caring administrators. The students encourage and support each other to do their best. Good grades and good times are complementary goals at Wakefield. Plus, the school encourages students to act responsibly and accept responsibility. Students can easily step up to more advanced classes or activities as their time and talents allow.


It’s a great school. Not only are we here for all four years of Upper School, but we will be sending another child Wakefield’s way in the near future.
